Student Outlook on the SATs essays

Student Outlook on the SAT's essays The Sat, scholastic assessment test, is used for colleges to measure what a student may be able to do on any given day. Colleges use it as a basis for whom they accept to their college. The SAT is administered by the ETS, or educational testing service. Overall, the SAT is a long, grueling test that tends to cause mostly anxiety among the test-takers. The SAT is a three hour-long test including two ten-minute breaks after Section Two and Section Four. The SAT is divided into 7 sections, which can appear in any order. The sections include: two thirty-minute Verbal sections with analogies, sentence completions, and critical reading, one fifteen minute Verbal section with critical reading, one thirty minute math section with quantitative comparisons and grid-ins, one thirty minute section with regular math, and another fifteen minute section with regular math. Included among the different sections is a thirty-minute experimental section, which could be either math or verbal, but this section does not affect the test-takers score. The SAT is scored on a scale up to 1600, where you can gain a point for a correct answer, but lose a fraction of a point for an incorrect answer. You neither gain nor lose points for omitting a question. Also included in your score is an automatic 200 points on both your Math and Verbal sections. Additionally, at least a C on the SAT is equivalent to an 1100 on the test. The SAT is administered by in a students high school years, but anybody can sign up to take the test. After a survey of random high school students, grades nine through twelve, results proved that older students tend to recognize the importance of the SATs while younger students didnt understand the test as well. Formatting for Emphasis In this post, we’ll be looking at four ways to format emphasis in Microsoft Word: italics, bold, underlining, and all-caps. We’ll also look at why you shouldn’t use quote marks for emphasis. 1. Italics In formal writing, italics are the best way to emphasize text. This includes most business writing and academic work. For example, you might find italics used in a textbook like this: That Dickens, always popularizing literary techniques. Here, italicizing â€Å"popularize† highlights the distinction between inventing something and making it popular. Italics can also be used to emphasize key parts of a quotation. If you do this, you also need to show that you’ve changed the formatting in the quoted text: This may not be a reliable interpretation The quote above uses APA rules for adding emphasis, but make sure to check your style guide for how to do this if you’re using a different referencing system. 2. Bold While bold fonts are mostly used for headings and subheadings in formal documents, they are used for emphasis online and in informal writing. Here, the words â€Å"strobe lighting† have been highlighted so they will stand out even for someone who is skim reading the document. 3. Underlining In the days of typewriters, which didn’t have bold or italic fonts, underlining was the standard way to emphasize text. Now that we have computers, which offer a range of formatting options, this is less common. However, you can still use underlining for emphasis if you want, especially in less formal writing. It can also be useful if you need to emphasize one or two words within a highlighted passage. For example: Underlining in action. In this case, underlining has been used to make â€Å"flying monkeys† stand out from the other bold text. 4. ALL-CAPS You can also emphasize something by capitalizing it, though this can make it SEEM LIKE YOU’RE SHOUTING. This type of emphasis is therefore best saved for when you want something to look loud. Think of all-caps as a textual loudhailer. However, all-caps should not generally be used in formal or academic writing. A Warning About Quotation Marks One common mistake is using quote marks to emphasize a word. For example, you might see a sign outside a shop that says this: Possibly sarcastic? The idea here is to stress the word â€Å"bargain.† But this isn’t correct. And since quote marks can be used to indicate irony (i.e., scare quotes), it could even seem sarcastic! This sign could therefore suggest that the products are overpriced, which is the complete opposite of the intended message. As such, you should avoid using quote marks for emphasis to ensure clarity in your written work.

It is an essential part of enzymes, the cellular membrane, active transport, protein synthesis and wound healing. Because one relies so heavily upon proteins and its function the structure of proteins is also very important. â€Å"The way a protein will fold over its self-determines how it interacts with other chemicals in its proximity, primarily because of different attractive forces being subjected at specific angles from certain amino acids on the protein’s primary structure and the final shape in the tertiary and quandary structure (Circular dichroism ). † The structure of proteins can range from simple to complex molecules. Proteins may consist of a primary, secondary, tertiary, and quaternary structure. The secondary structure consists of hydrogen bonds which join amide and carboxyl groups. These bonds aren’t far from the backbone of proteins. This structure is capable of structures such as alpha helicies, beta sheets, and beta turns (Jim, 2007). The physical, secondary structure is important because it helps in determining the activity of a protein. Circular Dichrosim spectroscopy has been identified as prevalent application used in structural biology in determining whether a protein is folded, characterizing its secondary structure, tertiary structure, and the structural family along with other uses as well (Circular dichroism ). Circular dichroism, CD spectroscopy has defined a form of light absorption spectroscopy. It measures the difference in the absorption of circular polarized light by a substance on the right and left. The secondary structure of a protein can be analyzed between the spectrum of approximately 260 and 180 nm. Estimates of secondary proteins can be compared to X-ray crystallography or NMR (Kelly, Jess, C., 2005).The structures identified in this spectrum are the alpha helix, parallel and antiparallel beta sheet, and turns (Berndt, 1996). The only drawback with CD is that even with the implied spectrum, it has been found that there is no exact standard reference spectrum for a pure secondary structure. Synthetic homopolypeptides used to obtain reference spectra are in general, poor models for the secondary structures found in proteins (Berndt, 1996). The CD signal reflect the entire molecular population; it can determines how much of a certain structure and protein contains. It cannot determine the specific residues involved in the alpha-helical portion. In Circular Dichroism a linear polarized light passes through a optically active sample of a protein. This protein has a different absorbance for components. The amplitude of the stronger absorbed component will smaller than that of the less absorbed component. A projection is created of the resulting amplitude. The result is no longer a linear line but and ellipse (PARTHASARATHY, 1985). Different analyses have been developed to help with various contributions that arise from the different types of secondary structures present in a single molecule. The American Dream in Lorraine Hansberry's A Raisin in the Sun "A Raisin in the Sun" by Lorraine Hansberry is about living the "American Dream". Hansberry wrote her story in 1959. The "American Dream" that she describes and the one that currently exists are vastly different. In 1959, the dream was to work hard and live a comfortable life. American’s believed that you would live a good life as long as you had your family and had food on the table. Let’s fast forward to 2003. The "American Dream" is to have two cars, a glamorous house, a pool, a 40 hour a week job, and oodles of "stuff". I define stuff as material possessions such as DVD’s, video games, and TV’s. When did the dream go from being happy to having tons of material possessions? I am devising a tipping point strategy to change the "American Dream" back to having a close relationship with your family, working hard, and being happy. By changing the dream, Americans will be happier and have less stress in their life. The new "American Dream" is strongly engraved into the minds of society. It will be difficult to "tip" back the other way. The change will not happen suddenly. It can only happen slowly, and over a long period of time. The change from Hansberry’s dream and the current dream also took years to change. The Law of the Few plays a huge role in changing the dream. To tip the dream in the better direction, some people that are influential in society need to adopt this dream as their own. If a man as successful as Bill Gates decided that he wanted a more laid back, it would do a great deal to attract others to do so as well. In retrospect, if I adopted this dream, no one would care. Bill Gates is considered a connector in our society. He has done much to improve our technology. That is why he would be more likely to cause a "social epidemic" than I would. The second factor that would have to be dealt with in changing the "American Dream" is the stickiness factor. Let’s use Bill Gates as the example again. If he went on TV proclaiming that he was a billionaire, no one would listen. Even if they did listen, they would not remember. If Gates went on TV and said he was only going to work part time and he was going to give most of his money to charity, people would listen.

Ravindra Nath Tagore

The youngest of thirteen surviving children, Tagore was born in the Jorasanko mansion in Calcutta (now Kolkata) of parents Debendranath Tagore (1817–1905) and Sarada Devi (1830–1875).? He was mostly raised by servants, as his mother had died in his early childhood; his father travelled extensively. Gay Marriage Should Be Legal

Gay marriage should be legalized. Our civil rights and the Constitution give us many liberties. One of our civil liberties is the pursuit of happiness, which homosexual people are not allowed to chase. They cannot be married to the person they love and it violates their freedoms. According to professorshouse. com, â€Å"In Alaska, Nevada, Montana, Oregon, Utah, Nebraska, Missouri, Michigan, North Dakota, Ohio, Kentucky, Oklahoma, Kansas, Louisiana, Arkansas, Georgia, Mississippi, Texas, and Alabama, not only is gay marriage banned, but so are civil partnerships.   The 1st amendment of the Constitution states that a person’s religious beliefs or a lack of thereof must be protected. Legislatures also cannot discriminate against marriages of the minority party which, homosexual people fall into that category. There is also an amendment stating there is separation of church and state, so you cannot declare that a marriage is a gift from God. Others might ask why gay marriage sh ould be legalized, but my question is this: why should other people be able to choose who marries who? If a man and a woman get married, no one seems to care.They are two people who feel affection for one another and those two people want to start a family. If we change the scenario a little bit and a man and a man, or a woman and a woman, try to get married it causes uproar. They are not allowed to be married or raise a family together. Imagine waking up one day to a world that was completely opposite from the world we went to sleep in, meaning gay people are now straight and all straight people are now gay. Do you think the newly straight people would fight for the newly homosexual people’s rights?America is the land of the free, but we are not free to marry whomever we would like. After everything straight people have put homosexual people through, in this scenario, homosexual people would most likely vote for their rights because they would want their rights to be voted f or. We are equals in this world whether we are Black, White, Hispanic, Indian, or any other race for that matter. Why should we not be equals based on sexual orientation? In a marriage there is one thing that truly matters: love.Yes, other things are important too, but not one couple would make it to even asking someone to marry them if there was not some love. Las Vegas, Nevada is also known for being the place where many weddings occur which are annulled within one week. These marriages are not based off love, but simply a drunken night in Vegas. High divorce rates weaken what a marriage is defined as. Why are we not able to rewrite what a marriage stands for and make it include a homosexual marriage? The definition of love, according to dictionary. com is as follows: â€Å"Very strong affection: an intense feeling of tender affection and compassion. If gay people feel this way then why shouldn’t they be able to be married? If they are happy with each other, said persons s hould be able to marry. California, Hawaii, New York, and the District of Columbia all have domestic partnership laws and civil partnerships meaning it is almost a marriage without the matrimony. Civil partnerships also give couples the ability to have joint bank accounts, live in the same house, and pay bills together. Homosexual couples are not entitled to this in most states. Marriage benefits should be available to all couples, no matter what.In places where gay marriages are banned, the gay couples are not able to have the same benefits as others. When filing for health care or insurance through a job, gay couples are not able to add each other on. Most loved ones, such as a spouse or a child, in a straight marriage, can make life altering decisions in a hospital if need be. Since gay marriage is not legal, said person’s spouse is not recognized as their next of kin and care is delayed. Who would be affected if homosexual marriage was legalized? No one. Everyone believes there is one person who is out there to love us.Gay people feel the same way. Parenthood is a benefit of marriage and gay couples cannot have children by themselves, without some type of help, so they look to adoption agencies. In some cases gay couples are put on longer waiting lists or denied completely. There are other benefits to being married as well, such as tax breaks. On the website professorshouse. com it reads, â€Å"When we hit our mid-thirties, we wanted only true friendships- friendships that were durable. † This is a perfect example of matrimony and what it should be based on. . According to dictionary. om a marriage is, â€Å"The legal or religious ceremony that formalizes the decision of two people to live as a married couple, including the accompanying social festivities. † If this is a marriage why are gay people not included in this? Even though gay marriage should be legalized, some people have different beliefs. In most religions including, Christ ianity, Islam, and Orthodox Judaism same sex preferences are a sin. People believe in procreation to repopulate the world, but are against gay marriage and homosexuals adopting children because they cannot procreate on their own.If this is a stand point on making or breaking gay marriage then only people who are fertile and want to procreate should be able to get married according to this bias. America has never really given gay marriage a chance, but they believe gay marriage will weaken its institution by leading to high divorce rates. On loveandpride. com I read, â€Å"One reason legislatures are denying gay marriage is because they are fearful that opening the door to allowing gay marriages will open the door to polygamy as well. This would also mean reopening cases about polygamy in the past which they are not willing to do. Others are fearful for children’s futures and they fear being raised by two fathers or by two mothers may compromise children’s mental capac ities. Even though to most people gay marriage should be illegal and should stay in its current state, I believe we need to change the world for future generations. We feared that different religions were going to clash, but now all of the religions coexist. White people had Black and Hispanic slaves, but we overcame the odds and now White men, Black men, and Hispanic men can be equals.If it is possible to overcome such fierce obstacles then we can overcome the boundary obstructing gay marriages and straight marriages alike. Gay marriage should be legalized for these reasons. Evolution will always continue and at any given point in time, something will occur that we will not like in this world, but we can overcome this. Gay marriage is a controversial issue that people have been fighting for years and it has finally come to the surface. We should take charge of it.

Among these unproven claims are the ones saying that GM foods contribute to the increase in allergies, make the body resistant to antibiotics, and are possible causes of cancerous cells replication. Countries like the US, which have embraced the use of GMOs, were rated among the least users of household income on food. The American government has allowed the growth of GMO crops, and this is what has constantly saved the incomes of its citizens from being largely used up for the purchase of foods. GMO foods are resistant to pests and harsh climatic conditions; they also take a short time to grow, thus reducing food shortage and providing affordable foods. Poor countries should look beyond the unjustified claims about the negative effects of GMOs and focus on generating a dependable source of food to improve their economy. Genetically modified foods are likely to attract the attention of many people for a long period. Various people in different fields are trying to argue out the pros and cons of consuming GMO foods and growing genetically modified crops, but the decision to consume them or not lies in the hands of each individual. Food production for the growing world population is already a problem. With the current changes in climate, this problem is likely to become worse since the increased temperatures coupled with excessive rain will result in increased infestation of pests and diseases. These will, in turn, affect farmers whose yields will go down and the issue of world hunger will continue (Freedman, 2013). The use of genetically modified organisms will undoubtedly assist in solving the hunger problem. Plant scientists are able to match dominant genes in crops to create new varieties of crops that can adapt to the changing climate. This is an advantage that favors poor countries as a result of the large supply of food generated. Genetically engineered crops are able to resist multiple diseases and droughts thus ensuring that in the event of a dry spell, there will still be a reliable source of food (Freedman, 2013). The use of genetically engineered organisms has greatly assisted the farmers especially in the developed countries that have accepted GM crops. Proponent plant scientists are encouraging the world to embrace genetically modified foods, because by doing so, the production of food will greatly increase, therefore the price of foods will go down and the number of people affected by hunger problems will reduce. GMO foods have many advantages that make them a better choice as compared to organic foods. Since pests are one of the greatest sources of losses to farmers, most farmers tend to use lots of pesticides which are undoubtedly hazardous to the environment, in order to protect their crops from the pests. GMO foods are pest resistant; therefore, they do not pose a threat to the environment. They are also safer for the consumers since they do not contain harmful chemicals absorbed from pesticides. Genetically engineered foods are also disease resistant and thus better than vulnerable organic crops since they are not affected by viruses and bacteria which cause many financial losses to farmers. This is good for farmers who live in cold places since they are able to earn a living by growing cold resistant crops. When farmers choose to grow organic foods, they have to deal with problems such as pests, which, in most cases, cause farmers great financial losses by the destruction of produce. Farmers also have to deal with diseases such as potato blight, which affects even future seasons as some remain resistant to herbicides. Such farmers, like potato farmers, are forced to maintain strong herbicides in an attempt to avoid blight on their produce, which is very costly (Rotman, 2013). The world is still facing hunger problems which proponent scientists have attempted to solve through genetic engineering of foods. With the current unpredictable climate, the growth of organic foods proves to be difficult and expensive; therefore, even the actual food produced is very expensive and unavailable to a bigger percentage of the world’s population. Since GMO foods are engineered to withstand the current climate changes that have been attributed to glo bal warming, they will prove to be cheaper to grow purchase. This, therefore, proves their affordability even to people living in poor countries that are more dependent on high-cost organic foods (Connealy, 2013). People who have not yet embraced GMOs do not need to worry too much about safety since scientists have worked tirelessly ensuring that safety standards are met. GMOs are engineered to have better taste, faster growth, high resistance to pests, diseases, and harsh climate; thus they depict positive attributes as compared to organic crops. This is also a good indicator of why organic yogurt has continued to be bought in large amounts. Therefore, it can be concluded that organic products such as yogurt will continue leading in terms of purchases (Van Loo, Diem, Pieniak, Verbeke, 2012). In a research conducted by Murali Gopal, Alka Gupta and George Thomas, soil microbes need food that is provided through recycling Agro wastes. According to this research, if enough compounds can be introduced to the soil through recycling, there is no need to use synthetics such as fertilizers. Increasing evidence is indicating that soil microorganisms are responsible for the provision of food to the world (Gopal, Gupta, Thomas, 2013). The issue of environmental conservation would also be boosted since there would be less pollution from pesticides and other farming chemicals resulting from their reduced application. Developing countries should also embrace genetically modified foods to counter the effects of droughts on food production. Genetically modified foods are the solution to many of the food problems facing numerous countries today and should be accepted instead of being rejected. Advantages of organic foods outweigh their disadvantages. Conventional food have been known to cause several illnesses and obesity meaning that overtaking them renders people to high risks of illnesses. Organic foods have also been cited as safe to both humans and animals. Moreover, they are environmentally friendly since they help to control pollution. Organic foods have also been associated with good tastes despite the fact that they are in low supply since they are produced by counted farmers across the world. Therefore, organic foods are better than non-organic.
